The Collective is more than a group of unique places to stay. More than anything it is people. So many guests over the years have become a part of the life at Coady's Cabana. They help at the pool, they host BBQ's, they put on Ice Cream Socials, they deliver wood or facilitate Aqua Antics. They become more than guests - they are part of the Collective, along with family members and workaways. They meet up around the world! They bring unexpected linkages. In a word the Collective is special because of the special people who have become part of it. The Collective rate is in recognition of all they do beyond being guests.
The Cabana, The Studio and The Glamp have been created by Matthew and Jane over the past 26 years. Matthew is a retired Architect which shows throughout the property. Over that time there have been constant changes. The gardens were started and enhanced, art was acquired, as were cats, dogs, chickens and horses... even people! Despite trying to simplify their life - no dog, no cats, no horses - their home and property is a busy place they love to share.
Idle Cottage
"Idle Cottage", a ground floor one-bedroom apartment in the house may be available for rental. Just ask about it.
The Chickens The chickens are now the only "pets", and live in the back garden close to the house. Please ask if you would like to visit them in their "chicken condo". There are three now - all raised from day old chicks! Emily is an Easter egger, she lays large blue eggs, but not often! Also Dora the Explorer, an Olive Egger who lays green eggs and Star who consistently lays one brown egg a day.
Workawayers
For the past 10+ years, we have invited young (or older!) people who want to learn about Canada, immerse themselves in a community, learn how to cook, what it takes to maintain a property and home and to live well, to join us. They come through the Workaway program. We love the energy, and help, they bring into our lives. They have added interest to the years, most of all new ideas and enthusiasm which adds to life here.
So many workers over the years from all over the world - - from the UK, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Netherlands, Italy, France, Spain, Czech, USA, Mexico, Columbia, Australia, New Zealand Poland, and Sweden so far!
We look forward to continuing to welcome work-awayers into our home in 2024 to help with gardening, renovations and maintenance. We can guarantee they will all leave having not only learned a few things but having had a very enjoyable time, as we do with them! Although they don't help with the Cabana you may meet them at the pool on their off time!
This year, Tyra from Edmonton - unusual for us to have a Canadian! is with us. She will be staying until September, living in Maid in the Shade - Matthew's experimental tent in the lower garden. Not sure how we would manage without them!!
The Microhaven
Many of our guests who have been coming for years will have heard about Matt's microhaven project. It is one big step closer to reality now as we now have the base trailer! Stay tuned!
